Cochran Mill Park -1 Cemetery
Cochran Mill Park Cemetery #1 is located west of Cochran Mill Rd. As you enter the park, bypass the parking lot, walk down the service road (that used to be Upper Wooten) toward the big field, and continue west on the trail as shown below.
This cemetery is unsubstantiated in that there are no traditional tombstones, inscriptions, written, or oral histories that record this site. Yet the placement of approximately 35 stone markers gives a strong indication that this may have been a primitive graveyard. My first visit to this cemetery was during an orienteering meet in 1995, when the cemetery was uses as a location on my course. This was the first time I ever saw a primitive cemetery marked only with rocks. A section of the map is shown below that was developed by my husband Sam Smith for the Georgia Orienteering Club. The cemetery is marked in the center of the pink circle. |
